Delaunay Copy

Description

This is a painting I've just completed for my dad's Christmas present.
It is a COPY of an artwork I saw online whilst researching Robert and Sonia Delaunay's work. I don't think the original was done by either of the Delaunays, I think it's a copy of their style, but the website was in French so I couldn't be certain.

I really liked the nice clean lines in the original, probably achieved by airbrush, but reproducing that freehand with a paintbrush is a little testing. I didn't get it quite right, but it's passable. Besides, I'm sure my dad won't mind.
However, it's a really cool painting, and can easily be applied to the concepts the Delaunays were fond of: the prisming effect of light, and the electrical revolution.

Obviously, I altered a few things, my canvas wasn't square, so unlike the original, mine has black space around it. I was unsure of this effect when painting it, but upon completion I was pretty pleased because it adds a whole new dimension to the painting, as if the design and colour elements were at the end of a tunnel or something (maybe the singularily of a black hole! lol) and the black provides a nice contrast with the colours, making them really "pop". The photo doesn't do it justice, as the flash makes a kind of glossy effect, whereas the painting itself is very matte.

Done on canvas in watercoloured paint (very un watered down, watercoloured paint!)
